Varsity sees foul play in poor ranking
Posted on : 28-09-2010 Source : The Times Of India

Guntur: Perhaps for the first time,a university in the state is planning to approach the government for a CID probe to unravel the mystery of a reported sabotage by some internal forces which apparently scuttled the chances of the university getting a top rank grading by the National Assessment and Accreditation Committee (Naac) of UGC.

Stung by the low grading given by Naac, the Acharya Nagarjuna University (ANU) has also decided to appeal to Naac for reconsideration of its ranking. The Naac recently awarded ANU with B grade after giving 2.85 cumulative grade point average (CGPA) out of 4 points. The university authorities were hopeful of getting A grade this year.Last time too,Naac awarded B+ grade with a CGPA of 2.8 4 p o i n t s t o A N U.The B grade ranking has thoroughly disappointed us.We are going for an appeal, a visibly upset vicechancellor Y R Haragopal Reddy said.Naac committee basically looks into curricular system, teaching, learning and research aspects, consultancy and extension, infrastructure, student support programme, governance and leadership and, finally, innovative practices to assess the performance of an educational institution. While several new wings, including exclusive colleges in engineering,B Ed,pharmacy and architect u re streams, were added, nearly Rs 100 crore was spent to create new infrastructure in the last few years. We are far better than many top-ranked educational institutions. We definitely deserved a better grade, observed varsity rector K V Rao.The authorities came to a conclusion that some persons working in the university were behind Naacs decision to lower the grade. The members of the academic senate have asked the VC to explore all options to fight the case, including lodging a police complaint against those who worked to bring a bad name to the unive r s i t y, senior faculty Y Kishore said.Sources said a senior lecturer in the engineering stream had allegedly sent a six-page anonymous letter to the Naac before its inspection about two months ago.The lecturer was said to have made several allegations against the varsity authorities and termed the records of ANU as fake. It is unfortunate that a highlevel committee comprising experienced professionals seems to have taken the anonymous letter by a lecturer into confidence to lower the grade of ANU, fumed university registrar M V N Sharma.According to sources, the senior lecturer had aspired to become the principal of the engineering college, but the VCs reluctance had angered him to shoot off a letter to Naac committee.Previously,Naac used to award nine grades A++, A+, A,B++, B+, B and C++, C+ and C.However,it changed the grading system recently by limiting it to just threeA,B and C.The assessment is taken up every five years.
